Event: SPS Information Meeting - Bleeding Hearts and Fumitories

Place: Emmanuel Anglican Church, 607 Dufferin Ave @ 12th Street, Saskatoon, we meet in the church basement.

Presenter: Lyndon Penner

Gardeners are always looking for hardy perennials that are easy to care for, highly attractive, and offer a long season of interest. The old-fashioned bleeding heart is found in many gardens across the prairies but how well do we really know these stately and often overlooked hardy plants? The truth is that bleeding hearts are versatile, adaptable, and great for gardeners both new and experienced. They also have some stunning close relatives that are not grown very much primarily because people don't really know about them! The fern-leaf bleeding hearts can make terrific companions for hostas, primulas, and other shade loving perennials. There are some delicate looking (but tough) climbers in this family too, and many of them are important food sources for pollinators. Come and learn about the fabulous Corydalis species with their spectacular blue flowers, the unusual yellow bleeding heart with its teardrop-shaped flowers of gold, and the beguiling fumeworts with spur-like blooms of pink, purple, or mauve! Your woodland garden will never be the same!

Free and open to the public
