Tulips in Calgary

Reviewed by Brenda Korchinski for Flora Borealis, Vol 4, No. 3, October 1991
For bulb information closer to home, read Tulips in Calgary: A Summary of Three Years Experience by Donna Balzar. this typewrittn report on the use of massed tulips (1000-2500) at the Calgary Zoo summarizes findings with fourteen different divisions of tulips grown there from 1985 to 1988. They conclude that single Early Tulips (Bellona, Christmas Marvel, and Van der Neer) and Darwins (Elizabeth Arden, Apeldoorn, Golder Apeldoorn) are most successful in large display beds, and that lily-flowered tulips (West Paint, White Triumphator, Dyanito) provide the most unusual display, especially in sunny sites. The author is particularly scathing in her remarks about the Viridiflora tulip 'Hollywood', describing the division as a whole as 'bizarre' and'Hollywood' in particular as 'Dirty looking, muddy.....Probably the ugliest tulip of 1988'. This report is worth a look if tulips are new to you or you want to make an informed choice from the tulips available in the stores and catalogues.
